About us

Who we are

The team of organizers behind this conference consists of prof. dr. Jeroen Deploige (Ghent), prof. dr. Mike Kestemont (Antwerp), prof. dr. Wim Verbaal (Ghent) and Jeroen De Gussem (Ghent). Together they form part of a research project entitled “Collaborative Authorship in Twelfth-Century Latin Literature. A Stylometric Approach to Gender, Synergy and Authority,” on which they have been engaged since 2015. This project, funded by the Special Research Fund (BOF) of Ghent University, centers on applying computational attribution techniques to a corpus of twelfth-century writers in which the ascription or authenticity of several texts is contested, particularly of writers who are known to have worked in partnership or with the assistance of secretaries, e.g. Hildegard of Bingen, Heloise and Peter Abelard, Bernard of Clairvaux and Suger of Saint Denis.

Jeroen De Gussem is a PhD student (since October 2015) in History and Literature. His domains of research interests are computational stylistics, medieval authorship and twelfth-century Latin literature.

Jeroen Deploige (PhD Ghent University, 2002) is professor of Medieval History. His research and teaching focus on the cultural, social and religious history of the high (and to a lesser extent also late) medieval Low Countries and adjacent regions.

Wim Verbaal (PhD Ghent University, 2000) is professor of Latin Language and Literature at Ghent University (since 2005). His research fields are twelfth-century literature, writings and spirituality of and around Bernard of Clairvaux and Peter Abelard, and Latin poetics after Antiquity.

Mike Kestemont (PhD University of Antwerp, 2012) is assistant professor in the department of literature at the University of Antwerp in Belgium. His area of expertise can be situated in the Digital Humanities, more specifically in the domains of authorship attribution, computational stylistics and Deep Learning.
